I wonder if this is inspired by the Ship Kale took off from Earth with in Titan A.E.?

If we start building spacecraft in orbit, we can easily create something along these lines with current-day tech. Unfortunately... will Congress ever approve such a budget? HELL no... those buncha frakkers.

not really feasible either. this would be incredibly expensive to pull off.

Oh its feasable. We're just never given the budget to do so. We've built the space station just fine. We're perfectly capable of doing the same thing with a modular spacecraft capable of reaching Mars.

if we did we would have to catch a ride with the russians as we no longer have any way to get into space by ourselves.

Because Bush retired the shuttles, before we had any concrete plans on what to replace them with, or any budget to do so with.
