SXT-172 by TheXHS SXT-172 by TheXHS
The SXT-172 is a interplanetary cargo spacecraft. This one can not land on the planet's surface, just beyond the orbit. For the descent to the surface used shuttle for containers with cargo and crew, shuttle also living compartment during interplanetary flight. For interplanetary travel used nuclear rocket engines.

Cool design,  but having the radiators stick out in the back like that causes problems. Radiation from the engines will reflect off of the radiators and back into the crew quarters up front. Not something you want to happen.

It's better to put the engines behind a radiation shield, and the arrange the radiators so they all fit into the shield's shadow. This means the Radiators will be narrower in the back and wider in the front, a backwards V shape.

There is a temptation to put the radiators in the back like that for two reasons. First the reactor is the largest source of heat, and second because we are used to drawing rockets or aircraft which tend to put the center of drag near the back for stability. But the first reason can be minimized as coolant pipes can allow the radiators to be placed anywhere, and the second is un-necessary in the vacuum of space.

I love how real it looks. Like something we'd really build within the next fifty years.

Супер! Чем лучше прорисованная работа, тем охотнее её перерисовать !!

bad thing with shuttle you need ready landing area

Nice design and beautiful colors, I like it, nice work.

If I might make a suggestion, I often go for realistic spacecraft and this isn't bad at all only it's lacking enough reaction mass (Fuel). I'd suggest adding long tanks on either side of the cargo area. Also, the cargo moduals, maybe make them the same size as the cargo bay on the shuttle so it's easy just to load into the shuttle and off ya go. :)

If we use nuclear rocket engine, we have greater momentum with less weight, thanks to higher speed of the exhaust.
I think that the amount of reaction mass can be reduced for close flight (originally scheduled to Earth-Mars). And in the case of long flights (for example Jupiter, Saturn), you can add more tanks - because we have modular design.
As for cargo modules - a true, or need bigger shuttle, or smaller containers, but this idea has already appeared when the picture was painted ...

Well if your going nuclear, I'd suggest a gas core nuclear rocket, they'd have the highest temp/exhaust speeds. You'd likely want to shield your crew from ratiation as the echaust would be radioactive. :)

Or you could have a Bimodal NTR powering a VASMIR plasma engine

Indeed. :)

what about project orion?
ChaosJames Featured By Owner Jul 16, 2013
orion requires absurdly large ships to be viable, this one is far to small
